* ils n'appartiennent pas au temps présent, mais semblent avoir des liens avec des espèces contemporaines ;
* ils sont asexués et inaptes à la reproduction ;
* ils n'ont ni évolution, ni pré-évolution ;
* leurs noms sont formés de mots composés
